What is autoimmunity?

Simply put, autoimmunity means self-immunity and is an often life-long attack on the body, staged by its own immune system.

When talking about autoimmunity the underlying problem is similar: the immune system falsely recognizes the body's own cells as invaders and attacks them.

The assaults by the immune system can affect every organ of the human body and are usually life long. Sometimes it can also affect many parts of the body at once. This is typical for autoimmune rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Early diagnosis is essential in the management of autoimmune diseases. Identifying an autoimmune disease in its early stages offers the best chance at preventing or delaying irreversible damages to the target organs or tissue.

To aid in the diagnosis of these most poorly understood diseases as early as possible Thermo Fisher Scientific ImmunoDiagnostics, formerly Phadia, offers high quality blood tests for the detection of disease-specific autoantibodies.

As in all diagnostic testing, the diagnosis is made by the physican based on both test results and the patient history.
