The PhARF Award 2009
The PhARF (Phadia Allergy Research Forum) Award Ceremony took place at the EAACI meeting in Warsaw on June 8.

The winner was announced by Prof Walter Canonica, President of WAO, and the prize - amounting to USD 50 000 – was handed over by Prof Gunnar Johansson to Dr Hamida Hammad, a scientist at Laboratory of Immunoregulation and Mucosal Immunology, University of Ghent, Belgium. Her main focus has been on unrevealing the precise role of dendritic cells in causing allergic sensitization and how this knowledge could be exploited for the design of novel therapies for allergy.

Honorable Mentions
 
Honorable Mentions were given to Prof Alan Irvine, a paediatric dermatologist at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, with a research interest in genetic skin diseases that has contributed to initiate a paradigm shift in the understanding of the pathogenesis of atopic disease.

Dr. Matthew Perzanowski, a researcher at Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, New York, who has made significant contribution to studies of environmental exposure, influencing allergic sensitization and diseases outcomes.
